Many parts of the country are
experiencing excessive heat. Seniors are especially
vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
The Administration on Aging has developed a fact sheet on
"How to Lower the Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses." This fact
sheet contains helpful hints and information on where to
turn for assistance to prevent heat-related illnesses. For a
copy of the fact sheet,
click here. We urge you to provide any
assistance which may be needed and to share this information
with seniors who may be especially vulnerable to excessive
heat, particularly those who are home bound who may not have
air conditioning or other cooling units.” |

Together, these Area Agencies on Aging and TTUHSC provide services to over 100 Texas counties. The West Texas Cares collaborative initiative is designed to address the needs of family caregivers in the West Texas region who are
age 60 and older and may qualify for services such as respite care, counseling, education, and home modification. Through the use of the WestTexasCares.com website, posters, newspaper articles, and public service announcements on area radio and television stations, the partners hope to reach out to older people throughout West Texas who are involved in family caregiving and provide them with helpful information and services.

Special Announcement |
|

The West Texas Cares project has been designated as a National Family Caregivers’ Month Caregiver Program Champion by the US
Administration on Aging. As one of only 20 caregiver programs in the United States
to receive this award, the project was featured on the AoA/National Family
Caregiver Support Program website on November 8, 2004. West Texas Cares was
chosen for this honor on the basis of innovation, partnerships, and ability to replicate
the program in other areas/regions. Congratulations to all who have worked on the
project and a special thanks to the project’s funding sources, the US Administration
on Aging and the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. |
